April 2026 – Dedham Vale
April continued the trend of declining numbers, with only four fully fit Pheasants able to muster for this trip to Dedham Vale. Despite the low turnout, those that turned up were treated to an excellent walk. A particularly picturesque corner of Essex, the price of such beauty was the need to pay for parking. Setting themselves an ambitious four hour deadline, the group followed the River Stour towards Flatford Mill while enjoying the wide-open vistas on offer. With the sun shining and cameras out, the initial miles flew by and Manningtree soon hove into view.
With memories of Constable country still vivid, the second part of the walk took the group uphill towards Lawford and St Mary’s Church. Passing a partially dressed chap along the way, the Pheasants stopped in the church grounds for amazing bacon and scrambled egg rolls covered in chilli jam, all provided by Steve. This heralded the return of the semi-dressed gentleman who then smartened himself up before going to church for Sunday service. The Pheasants then looped through Lawford Park and joined the Essex Way towards Dedham. Crossing the railway line, Pheasant Tom introduced the rest of the flock to the Merlin Bird app. The group were soon recording numerous bird calls and confidently listening for Robins and Great Tits. Passing the heavy horse centre and the local cricket ground, Dedham was soon back in view.
After repositioning the Toyota, it was into The Marlborough for drinks and food. Despite the enviable location, the Pheasants were robbed after falling for three mini starters for £19 and finding out six microscopic nibbles don’t split three ways or even touch the sides. Lesson learnt for next time when we return and will pick the Sun Inn for a better post-walk pub.
